Apple is preparing to expand its laptop lineup with an affordable entry-level MacBook, according to the latest reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The new device will reportedly launch in March and target budget-conscious consumers who want the MacBook experience without the premium price tag.
A18 Pro Chip Powers the New MacBook
The upcoming laptop will run on Apple's A18 Pro processor, the same chip expected to appear in the iPhone 17 Pro series. This marks a departure from Apple's usual approach of using dedicated M-series chips for Mac computers. The A18 Pro should deliver solid performance for everyday tasks while keeping production costs down.
Unlike Apple's higher-end offerings, this MacBook will feature an LCD display instead of the mini-LED or OLED panels found on premium models. Gurman reports that the device will retail for under $1,000, making it the most affordable MacBook in Apple's current lineup.
New Manufacturing Process for Build Quality
Despite the lower price point, Apple isn't compromising on construction. The laptop, internally codenamed J700, will feature an aluminum chassis manufactured using a new shell production process. This technique is reportedly faster and more cost-effective than current methods, allowing Apple to maintain quality while reducing expenses.
Multiple Color Options Incoming
Apple is also planning to differentiate this MacBook through color variety. The company has tested several finishes including blue, silver, dark grey, light green, pink, and light yellow. While not all colors will make the final cut, consumers can expect more options than the traditional silver and space grey typically found on MacBook models.
More Mac Updates Expected This Year
This entry-level MacBook won't be the only new laptop from Apple in 2026. Gurman notes that updated MacBook Pro variants are also in development, along with a MacBook Air featuring an OLED display. These higher-end models will likely debut later in the year, giving Apple a refreshed portfolio across all price segments.
The OLED-equipped MacBook Air represents a significant display upgrade for Apple's popular thin-and-light laptop. Current MacBook Air models use LCD panels, so the switch to OLED would bring improved contrast, deeper blacks, and better power efficiency.
