Google is rolling out some major updates to Google Play Games that should make purchasing decisions a lot easier. The biggest addition is Game Trials, a feature that lets you test the full version of paid games without spending a dime. Your progress carries over if you decide to buy, so you won't have to restart from scratch.
The trial feature is launching with select paid games on mobile first, but Google plans to bring it to Google Play Games for PC eventually. This cross-platform approach extends to purchases too. Google is implementing a "buy once, play anywhere" system where one purchase unlocks both the mobile and PC versions of a game. This is already live for the Reigns series, OTTTD, and Dungeon Crawler.
Beyond purchases, Google is adding Community Posts for popular games. This creates a dedicated space inside Google Play where players can share tips, tricks, and strategies. It's available in English for dozens of games now, with more languages coming soon.
Another new tool is Sidekick, an in-game overlay that surfaces relevant information and AI-generated tips while you're playing. It's available today for select paid games downloaded from Play. The overlay aims to keep you in the game rather than forcing you to switch apps or search online for help.
Google is also beefing up its paid games catalog. Over the coming months, several anticipated indie titles are hitting the platform: Moonlight Peaks, Sledding Game, and Low-Budget Repairs. Like other new additions, these will work across mobile and PC with synced progress.
These updates show Google's continued push into mobile gaming. The company is clearly trying to make paid games more appealing by removing purchase friction and adding social features. Whether these changes will convince more players to pay for mobile games remains to be seen, but the ability to try before you buy removes one of the biggest barriers to purchase.
