New Display Technology for the Upcoming Foldable

Samsung is reportedly preparing significant upgrades for its next-generation foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold8. According to recent industry reports, the company aims to reduce the visible display crease by approximately 20% compared to previous models. This improvement is expected to enhance the overall user experience by providing a smoother and more seamless screen surface.

Innovative Use of Ultra Thin Glass

The reduction in the crease is attributed to a new manufacturing approach. Samsung plans to implement Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) not only on the top layer of the display but also on the bottom. This dual-layer glass strategy is intended to provide better structural integrity while maintaining flexibility. To further reinforce the device, a laser-drilled metal support plate will be integrated into the folding mechanism, helping to maintain a flatter profile when the device is unfolded.

Competitive Landscape and Future Outlook

This technical direction highlights Samsung's evolving strategy in the foldable market. While competitors like Apple are rumored to be exploring glass substrates for their future foldable projects, Samsung is refining its existing UTG technology. Although a completely crease-free display was showcased at CES 2026, it remains to be seen if the full extent of that prototype will be realized in the Z Fold8 or if the 20% reduction is the immediate goal for this summer's release.
