Historically, Samsung’s foldable lineup has seen the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip series dominate sales figures. However, recent industry reports suggest a significant strategy shift for the upcoming generation. Insiders indicate that Samsung is preparing for the Galaxy Z Fold8 to become its most popular foldable device, potentially outselling its clamshell sibling for the first time.
Production targets for the upcoming devices reflect this optimistic outlook for the premium book-style foldable. Samsung reportedly plans to produce approximately 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold8. In contrast, production goals for the Galaxy Z Flip8 are currently estimated to be between 2.5 and 3 million units.
This shift mirrors the long-standing performance of the Galaxy S series, where the high-end Ultra model frequently outsells the standard and Plus variants combined. It suggests that even with a higher price point, consumers may be increasingly prioritizing productivity features and larger screen real estate over the compact design of the Flip series.
Beyond the primary Fold and Flip models, Samsung is also expanding its broader foldable portfolio. A new device, tentatively referred to as the "Galaxy Wide Fold," is rumored to have a production target of 1 million units. Additionally, the company is expected to release a niche, low-volume "Galaxy Z TriFold" to showcase its latest display innovations.
While these production figures provide a glimpse into Samsung's internal strategy, actual consumer habits will ultimately determine the outcome. The Galaxy S26 series is scheduled for unveiling later this month, while the new generation of foldables is expected to arrive around July.
